A textbook on social-science research methodology has enormous potential to bore and frustrate even the most dedicated student. This is why Babbie's book will be a most useful tool for any student of the social sciences. Babbie begins with an overview of the social-science enterprise, discussing both its structure and purpose. He then presents a variety of basic and advanced social-research techniques, including qualitative methods such as participant observation and interviewing and quantitative methods such as statistical analysis. Babbie also includes discussions of research ethics and the practical uses of social research. The two most appealing aspects of the book are Babbie's wonderful sense of humor, which keeps a dense subject area light and manageable, and his careful efforts to present the material so first-time research-methods students can clearly comprehend it. Babbie's book helped me survive my college research-methods course, and it stays on my shelf as an invaluable reference resource.

This book was super-helpful in helping me structure my qualitative research for my Ph.D. It presented useful information in an easy-to-understand formet without all the techno-jargon that many textbooks feel they need to use. Easy to understand and written for those who are just starting to conduct research.

The book is very valuable indeed for students and teachers as well as for researchers for grasping the very essence of social research. It is read at one breath and inspires one for further thinking over the matter and over the topic one has chosen for a future research. Unlike other books of this kind this work managed to avoid being too much dogmatic and rather invited a reader to think over the issues covered rather than take them for granted.

This book is designed for Graduate research work but is extremely helpful for undergraduate work as well. The author has a sense of humor which helps in understanding complicated material. The examples are perfect! The book guides you through strategic planning of your paper, layout and final product.
