Product Description Marcello Pagano and Kimberlee Gauvreau's PRINCIPLES OF BIOSTATISTICS, Second Edition is a concepts-based introduction to statistical procedures that prepares public health, medical, and life sciences students to conduct and evaluate research. With an engaging writing style and helpful graphics, the emphasis is on concepts over formulas or rote memorization. Throughout the book, the authors use practical, interesting examples with real data to bring the material to life.

another fine introductory biostatistics book February 13, 2008 Michael R. Chernick (Holland PA) 23 out of 24 found this review helpful
Like Rosner's book by the same publisher, this text is an introductory text by Harvard professors who teach medical students. It seems to be in competition with Rosner's book which makes me wonder why the same publisher is publishing them both. The style is different but the market and level of the two books seem to be the same. Both texts include diskettes with data for PCs. Both books are well written and cover mostly the same topics. The Pagano text seems to go into a little more detail on contingency tables and survival analysis. Both contain lists of valuable references.
Great book - one of few! March 23, 2007 W. Salomon 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
I've read the other reviews, and seems either you love it or hate it. I used this at Harvard School of Public Health on my 3rd time through bio-statistics (college, med school, MPH). Only this time I got it right, and think it was the balance between some non-calculus theory and practical examples in this book. Not understanding probability distributions at all leads to misapplication, and misuse. I have frequently turned to this as "tune-up book" if I've been away too long. The exercised sets are helpful and "realistic"; however, I do understand the problem with text-books and teacher's manuals that give only 1/2 the answers.
Biostatistics simplified June 26, 2007 Gary D. Bishop (Houston, TX USA) 2 out of 3 found this review helpful
Much easier to grasp than another text on the subject that I have experienced, (Biostatistics... A foundation for anlaysis in the Health Sciences; 8th Edition. Wayne W. Daniel). I am an MPH student with limited math background. Had a 4.0 going before my first experience with biostats. A "D" won't cut it in the program I am completing. Found an alternative Biostats course and the required text,(Principles of Biostats;Marcello Pagano), is much, much, easier for me to grasp. The real world examples and simplified methods make for an easier comprehension for those of us who lack a strong mathematic prerequisite.
Great transaction September 29, 2008 Kristin A. Evans (Rochester, NY USA) Very smooth transaction. Quick delivery and book is just as described...excellent condition. Would definitely do business again. Thanks!
Essential to understanding biostatistics November 9, 2005 Esther Maria Bonnici (New York, NY) 0 out of 2 found this review helpful
I found this book clear, concise, and extremely helpful. I am not a numbers and theory person, but using this book in conjunction with strong classroom lectures helped me to understand the principles and methods tremendously. I see there are some negative reviews posted, but statistical computing can be a difficult process to learn, and I can understand how students might become frustrated if they lack the proper lectures to support this excellent teaching tool. I hope a few rotten classroom experiences will not discourage other customers from buying this book.
